{"id":433,"date":"2025-11-29T13:19:47","date_gmt":"2025-11-29T13:19:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.etabc.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/29\/career-confession-i-hate-unprofessional-emails-2\/"},"modified":"2025-11-29T13:19:47","modified_gmt":"2025-11-29T13:19:47","slug":"career-confession-i-hate-unprofessional-emails-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.etabc.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/29\/career-confession-i-hate-unprofessional-emails-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Career Confession: I HATE Unprofessional Emails"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style='display:none;' class='shareaholic-canvas' data-app='share_buttons' data-title='Career Confession: I HATE Unprofessional Emails' data-link='https:\/\/www.mscareergirl.com\/career-confession-i-hate-unprofessional-emails\/' data-app-id-name='category_above_content'><\/div>\n<p><i>Non-capitalized subject lines, an improper greeting, the use of \u201cLOL\u201d or any other form of Internet\/text message slang, emoticons, lack of punctuation, attachments with no content in the email body<\/i>, <em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/\">mass marketing emails<\/a> that try to be personal but fall flat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>OK, I have been guilty of doing all of the above once or twice, but 99.9 percent of the time I avoid making these mistakes that would lead my colleagues to believe I\u2019m either lazy or just plain uneducated. While I\u2019ve been working with the same people for more than a year now, I am still pretty low on the&nbsp;totem pole and should show my true professionalism at every opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>So why do I get emails from colleagues positioned below <i>and<\/i> above me, or from people whom I\u2019ve never met, that say \u201cHey \u2013 here you go\u201d or \u201cThanks times a billion gajillion <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"\ud83d\ude42\" class=\"wp-smiley lazyload\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/16.0.1\/72x72\/1f642.png\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"\ud83d\ude42\" class=\"wp-smiley lazyload\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/16.0.1\/72x72\/1f642.png\"> :).\u201d I may be wrong, but the last time I checked \u201cgajillion\u201d wasn\u2019t a word. And following the use of a fake word with a series of emoticons is just embarrassing, for you and me.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m starting to think that technology is making it too easy for us Millenials to forget we are indeed working professionals. Just because it\u2019s OK to text a friend saying, \u201cHey girl, see ya in an hour,\u201d doesn\u2019t mean that\u2019s also a good way to remind your client that you will meet them for coffee later.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here are a few rules I keep in mind when sending emails to colleagues:<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write a <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchimp.com\/help\/best-practices-for-email-subject-lines\/\">subject line<\/a> that <i>actually<\/i> relates to the content of the email.<\/li>\n<li>Include a greeting. The reader\u2019s name followed by a comma is fine and \u201cHi [reader\u2019s name],\u201d is acceptable for a more friendly tone.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the body content short and concise.<\/li>\n<li>When in doubt, use \u201cThanks, [your name]\u201d or \u201cBest, [your name]\u201d to end your email. Simply leaving your email signature as a stand-alone sign off can be seen as unfriendly.<\/li>\n<li>Before sending, read the email as if you\u2019d received it. Delete any content that could be seen as rude or abrupt, even if that\u2019s not your intent.<\/li>\n<li>Be aware when you \u201creply all\u201d. Does everyone on the chain need to read your response?<\/li>\n<li>Remember that writing in all-caps is seen as yelling. If your email is important, use the high-priority button.<\/li>\n<li>Never, ever use Internet\/text slang or an emoticon. It\u2019s like begging for someone to think of you as an uneducated, technology-consumed Millennial.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What do you think? Are my rules on point or too strict?
